The former "black heart" of Europe is today almost a forest. Coal mining and steel making are more or less disappeared and the enormous urban region is trying to design a new perspective for the future.
The picture, taken from a skyscraper in the inner town of Gelsenkirchen, shows the old district of Feldmark. On the horizon a few industrial spots: Prosper coke plant on the right side, the Oberhausen gasometer behind the heap and the chimney of Trimet aluminium plant in Essen on the left side.
