Erzbergbahn at Vordernberg
|
Until 1975 this remarkable rack railway carried iron ore from the huge mine at Eisenerz to the steelworks at Leoben. The rack sections had gradients up to 70 0/00 (1 in 14 in British terms) and special locomotives were built for the line. The one at the rear is class 97-213, the class being built in 1892. Trains were always worked with a locomotive at each end. The leading locomotive is one of the three larger Class 197 locomotives, with 12 coupled wheels (Type F). Mostly northbound trains ran with empty wagons, but this train was loaded with what is probably limestone. This is the initial short rack section immediately to the north of Vordernberg Markt station.
