Welcome to Portovesme
|
I've talked about Portovesme yet. Well, this is a complete panoramic view, taken from the roof of the old abandoned coal power plant of the Monteponi Mining Company.
Let's start with the description of what you can see; from left: The chemical plant (EURALLUMINA) for the transformation of bauxite (the red sand everywhere) in "alumina". The 3 twin chimneys are the landmark of that. The three huge silos is also inside the chemical plant.
Behind them, you can see a far chimney and just at the feet of it a kind of blast furnace for aluminium, called Imperial Smelting Oven. Finally, on the right there's the ENEL Oil Power Plant, inside the rolling mill plant of ALCOA.
The long conveyer brings the bauxite from the harbour to the chemical plant.
The societies of the complex are:
EURALLUMINA (www.eurallumina.com) - production of alumina oxide (with the Bayer process)
PORTOVESME Srl (www.portovesme.it) - production of Zinc, Lead, Cadmium, Gold and Silver
ALCOA (www.alcoa.com) - production of primary Aluminium
ENEL (www.enel.it) - 1 oil power plant (two 180 MW units) and 1 coal/oil power plant (three 240 MW units)
All the complex was born around 1965-1970.
